Team Tournament Format

Postby  Wololo_Warrior » Fri Mar 10, 2017 2:30 pm

Random idea / suggestion for a team tournament format that pretty sure hasn't been done before?

Teams of 4+ players play BO7 matches (Any style of elimination / league could work)

1st match, both teams pick their best player to play a 1v1 match
After each match in the BO7 series, the losing team in previous game adds +1 player to their team for the next match.

So match 2 will be a 2v1 or a 1v2
Match 3 would be a 3v1 or 2v2
Match 4 would be a 4v1 or a 3v2
Match 5 would be either match over or a 3v3
Match 6 would be already over or a 3v4
Match 7 would be already over or a 4v4 finale

Providing skill levels of players were approximately the same, shouldn't get too many instances where matches are over after 4 games (no white-washes), but would be / could be pretty epic to see some 2v3's, 3v4's or dare we dream 3-1 or 4-1 victories

BO7 matches consisting of ideally, 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 games

Picturing Team A vs Team B perfect scenario:
Match 1 - 1v1 = Team A wins (1-0 Team A)
Match 2 - 1v2 = Team B wins (1-1)
Match 3 - 2v2 = Team B wins (2-1 Team B)
Match 4 - 3v2 = Team A wins (2-2)
Match 5 - 3v3 = Team A wins (3-2 Team A)
Match 6 - 3v4 = Team B wins (3-3)
Match 7 - 4v4 = Team A wins (4-3 Team A wins)

I doubt it would be fun to play/watch, due to 2v1, 3v2 and 4v3 being unwinnable as long as teams are reasonably close in skill, so these games would be over quick and really one-sided.

I like the idea of having a 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 format tho, I think it would be cool to see those merged into one tournament

Right enough it would be doubtful expecting a 1v2 / 1v3 with elite players having any kind of chance lol

Maybe could do capture the relic style game so a 2v1 the 1 player still had a fighting chance

----

Just doing the 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 concept as you say could also be fun - bit tricky with only 4 games = potential draws though?

Could do:
Teams of 4 players
3 x 1v1 Matches (3 players from each team plays 1 from other team in a 1v1 match)
2 x 2v2 Matches (2 from each team split and play 2 from other team)
1 x 3v3 Match (Player that missed out on the 1v1's Must play in the 3v3)
1 x 4v4 Match

= BO7 series

Wololo Warrior's suggestion sounds really good to me and it would bring some much needed variety to the TG tournaments. Too many of the recent tournies have been 4vs4 and it has gotten, atleast for me, rather boring. Maybe even combine that with the civ draft or go as extreme as you are allowed to use a civ only once per set, including 1vs1, 2vs2, 3vs3 and 4vs4. That would make for some interesting strategic civ choices.

Very good idea, + mixing more 1v1s and 2v2s in the longer setts would be really nice. Hope more of this will get implemented into future TG tournaments.

I like including more 1v1 2v2 and especially 3v3 in tg tournaments. 4v4 every game becomes too boring. But is that 2v1 etc idea serious? 1111

I'd like to see a proleague format for an AoC event. (So people play for their team, in a 1v1 event, in a winner stays on format. Once all of one team is eliminated the other team wins.)

Yeah it would be very fun to watch/play a mix of 1vs1 2vs2 3vs3 4vs4, but please no 2vs1 3vs2 11.

Going to just keep the spamming of ideas

10 player teams could be funky :) (and very!!! Complicated to arrange games)

1 x 1v1 player
2 x 2v2 players
3 x 3v3 players
4 x 4x4 players

Each player in team plays one game each in match of its 1 point for a win and 0 for a loss

Never really thought about too many different ways to run events, but has to be so many more funky / inter sting formats rather than the standard 1v1 / 2v2 formats

Will be fun to get drunk and have a think!

P.s the 2-1 was semi-serious yes, granted 90% of the games would end with a resignation after 10-15 mins game time, for those rare instances of a 2-3 or 3-4 player win, it just makes the win so much more glorious.

For sure I would of thought there are teams of 2,3 players that could take on and at least give good games to opponents with +1 player even at the elite level?

^ new strategies to quickly crush 1 opponent and get game to a 2-2 isn't out of realms of possibility

---

With that said, the 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 makes much more sense and a lot easier to manage!!
