This urges the first team to find a most balanced choice or even sneaks some special counter strategy with the combo of civs.

How about this, kind of similar to other ideas but slightly different.

Both team pick the 8 civs to be played, team A picks 1 civ, team B 2 civs, A 1 civ, B 1 civ, A1, B1, A1- to get a pool of 8 civs to be played.

Then team B gets to pick 1 civ for their team, Team A 2 civs etc as above so that both teams have their 4 civs. To add a twist, then both teams get to choose which player on the other team plays what civ.

Only problem here is that team B will take china, however team A can then take maya persia. Also team A has the option of picking huns on their final choice for the civ pool, which will force team B to take huns in their civ selection. But vice versa team A can choose byz or korean on their last to force a choice.

Im guessing teams will end up as:

China, Huns, Mongs, + 1 of japanese/aztecs/britons/celts
Vs Maya, Persia, Spain , Byz/Kor

actually I can see other options for picking - but I'll leave them unsaid, if used this can create some funny pick strategies.

I think it would be funny, yes, and good entertainment to watch. However, I see that becoming horribly unbalanced. One team gets Huns and Chinese, the other gets Persians and Mayans.

The fact that Huns are so much worse than others puts the team that has them at a serious disadvantage, even if they also get Chinese.

It's a fun idea, but I don't think it's balanced enough for a tournament final stage. It might be fun to keep in mind when the next tournament rolls around, though. And that goes for a lot of the ideas here.

You have no idea how long it took to come up with the ideas for settings for the stages so far in this tournament. This is actually making our jobs as mods easier.

Actually; huns in a pocket or an easy defense position is still really good on LN. Have a look at the stats on the matches so far, and rate huns then : huns is so underrated. It's OP in arab applies to LN once castle is underway.

That's true, but the problem is that they get to castle age 2-3 minutes behind everyone else. IF they get good defense or pocket, they can work well, but they could just as easily end up flank against a Chinese, who will have more like a 5-6 minute advantage.

Huns do fine in castle and imperial, but most probably would pick even Vikings over them.
