We have a tale for childrens here in Brasil (dont know if other places have it too) that a boy that worked as a shepherd used to make jokes yelling that a wolf was atacking him and his sheeps, so everyone on the village used to try to help him every time he did that stupid joke .And becouse he did that joke so many times and made everyone in the village furious with him,in the day a real wolf atacked his sheeps and him and he desperately cried for help no one believed on his cry and did not saved him.

I think you got my analogy.
